People always say that traveling during your 20s is so important, but they do not realize how unattainable that may seem to post grads. Many of us are probably still trying to acquire higher paying jobs, paying off student debt, or even living under our parents roofs to save some money on rent, so traveling may seem highly unattainable and like the least of your worries right now. But let me tell you to why your 20s are the perfect time to explore the world, and why it may be worth it to invest in such an experience.
It may sound cliché, but the saying "time is money" rings truer for me every year I age. Growing up with a mother in a wheelchair has been a constant reminder of how fortunate I am to have a healthy, functioning body. Not taking full advantage of it while I can would be a disservice to myself, and quite frankly to God, as He’s given me such blessings. In this vibrant phase of youth, we possess not just mobility but also the ability to recover quickly from physical activities. Waiting until retirement, when mobility may become more challenging, would mean missing out on so much of what the world has in store. Let’s seize the moment and explore everything life has to offer while we have the chance!
Not only should we seize our youth for the fun of these psychical adventures, doing them might even help us face fears. Whether it’s skydiving over breathtaking landscapes, bungee jumping off towering cliffs, or even diving with sharks, these thrilling activities push you to conquer your anxieties, live in the moment, and trust in a higher being. This builds your confidence and resilience.
In today’s divisive world, I think it is vital to be educated. Traveling offers you a first-hand look into the uniqueness of different cultures. From savoring authentic cuisine to participating in local traditions, every destination teaches you something new. Discovering how people live and celebrate around the globe creates a deeper understanding of others and an appreciation of our diverse world.
Our generation will eventually be the ones in positions of power and I deeply believe that if we start embracing one another with empathy, the world has a great potential to be a truly beautiful place for generations to come. Seeing the world can help us do this. Each country boasts its own beliefs, values, and ways of life, challenging you to rethink your own perspectives. You might realize that what you considered "normal" is just one of many ways to live.
During my travels, particularly in Europe this past summer, I witnessed how other countries prioritize work/life balance. Many cultures encourage taking long breaks, spending time with family, and enjoying life outside of work. Reflecting on this in contrast to the often hustle-focused culture in the U.S. definitely inspired me to seek a more balanced lifestyle.
Experiencing life abroad can serve as a powerful contrast to life back home. You might find that the pace slows down, allowing for more meaningful connections and self-reflection, which is very needed at this phase of life. The vibrant cultures, breathtaking scenery, and diverse histories are not just enriching; they are transformative.
Now let’s talk solo travel, a very common topic around 20 something’s. Traveling solo might sound intimidating, but it can lead to incredible friendships. I chose to go on a trip to Europe after graduating undergrad. I went with a travel company but by myself, not knowing anyone going into it. I thought this would be a little safer as a woman traveling alone instead of doing the full ‘backpack through Europe and stay in hostels’ thing. (Although, I think that might just have to be added to my bucket list now!!) Even though I went alone with no expectations of making friends, I met some of the most amazing people who have now turned into some of my best friends whom we now even travel to see each other. Shared experiences create bonds that last well beyond your travels. And I think you’ll find that many fellow wanderers are just as eager to connect!
So, if you're contemplating your next destination, take the leap! Your 20s are the perfect time to explore, learn, and grow.
Go see the world!
XOXO,
Liv
